Overhead & Gantry Cranes

Program Overview

Overhead and gantry cranes are used to move heavy and oversized objects that other material handling methods cannot.  Overhead cranes have a railed support structure attached to a fixed location such as the walls or the ceiling of a building and a wheeled trolley that travels across the bridge horizontally.  Gantry cranes are similar to overhead cranes except that the bridge for carrying the trolley is rigidly supported on two or more legs.  The Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulates the design, inspection, maintenance, and operation of cranes in 29 CFR 1910.179.
