Non-Emory Research Affiliates

Overview
Non-Emory Research Affiliates are individuals participating in research activities in Emory laboratories who are not enrolled in an Emory University or Oxford College course or degree program and who are not employed by Emory University as a full-time, part-time, or Emory Temporary Services (ETS) employee. Each school within Emory University has its own eligibility requirements and approval process for these individuals. Before contacting the Environmental Health and Safety Office (EHSO) at ehso@emory.edu or biosafe@emory.edu, please confirm that the individual meets the eligibility criteria for your school.
School of Medicine (SOM)
The Emory School of Medicine (SOM) supports the participation of students in SOM research activities to enhance their educational experience and provide exposure to both basic and clinical research, which may include interaction with human participants. Individuals participating in SOM research activities must be enrolled in a formal educational program or be compensated. Guidance and requirements for SOM laboratory involvement can be found here: Guidance: Students in SOM Labs/Research. Please review this information before initiating the onboarding process and ensure all criteria are met prior to contacting EHSO.

Emory College of Arts and Sciences (ECAS)
The Emory College of Arts and Sciences (ECAS) has established its own policies governing non-Emory individuals conducting research on campus. Laboratories should contact the ECAS Dean of Research for approval and to obtain the ECAS Volunteers in Research Labs Registration Form. Once the form is approved by the ECAS Dean of Research, EHSO will complete its section of the registration form and create an external SciShield login so the individual can complete the required online safety trainings.
Rollins School of Public Health (SPH)
The Rollins School of Public Health (SPH) requires that laboratories obtain written approval from their department chair for all non-Emory affiliates who will be participating in research activities in a SPH laboratory. After obtaining departmental approval, contact EHSO to initiate the onboarding process and we will provide further guidance.
