BARS Reference Sheets

A Biological Agent Reference Sheet (BARS) is a document that reviews the infectious nature of a pathogen and offers recommendations for work involving the agent in a laboratory setting. The document reviews containment issues, facility needs, emergency response, training, vaccine recommendations and availability, and follow up needs in the event of an exposure for a particular agent.

Not all agents on site will have BARS. BARS are typically developed for agents of higher risk on campus. BARS are also intended to be used as an additional training tool in order to facilitate increased awareness among researchers.

Principal Investigators (PIs) are responsible for communicating information contained in the BARS to those individuals who will work with or around the agent. BARS should be made readily available.

The Reference Sheet content is provided as a courtesy and is not intended as a sole source of guidance in the evaluation of Biological Agents.

Additional BARS on other agents will be added to this list as necessary.
